What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy is a non surgical treatment for treating joints, ligaments and tendons that have been weakened or injured. The idea behind prolotherapy treatment is to stimulate the body's natural ability to heal itself.

The weakened or injured areas of the body are injected with a solution that stimulates the growth and repair to strong and healthy tissues, therefore reducing pain and increasing range of motion.

Prolotherapy can be used to treat:

  • Arthritis
  • Knee Injuries
  • ACL Tears
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Shoulder Injuries
  • Bulging Discs
  • Bursitis
  • Lumbar or Cervical Spine Instability

How long does Prolotherapy work?

Prolotherapy is a type of Regenerative Injection Therapy in which the damaged ligaments or tendons are injected with a substance that either directly or indirectly causes a small amount of local tissue irritation or inflammation. The resulting inflammation triggers the body's natural repair processes to strengthen the existing tissue and to enhance the growth of new tissue.

Lose ligaments and chronically damaged tendons can lead to muscle spasm, loss of movement, and many painful sensations and feelings. Prolotherapy stimulates the body's own inflammatory process in a more controlled and less violent way than that which occurs during trauma or injury. The technique of creating this inflammation and the subsequent creation of new collagen is done by injecting solutions known as proliferants. Proliferants are nothing more than irritants that act directly or indirectly to stimulate inflammation or tissue production. These irritants break open the surface of the cell walls and allow the cell contents to spill out into the immediate and adjacent tissue spaces. This stimulates the healing cascade.

How long does the Prolotherapy treatment take?

The actual prolotherapy treatment is only about 30 minutes long. Since it is a non surgical treatment, it can be performed in a medical office and requires minimal downtime, with most patients able to return to work or normal activities later that day.
