What is Gua Sha treatment?
Gua Sha treatment is a traditional Chinese medicine treatment that aims to draw the "cold winds" out of the body. In traditional Chinese medicine, when you have a "cold wind" in the body, it can cause pain and tightening of the muscles. Most commonly, this will enter through the back of the neck, therefore a painful or stiff neck is a common side effect. Gua Sha treats muscle pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion.
What happens during Gua Sha treatment?
Gua Sha involves palpation and cutaneous stimulation where the skin is pressured, in strokes, by a round-edged instrument; that results in the appearance of small red petechiae called ‘sha’, that will fade in 2 to 3 days. Raising Sha removes blood stagnation considered pathogenic, promoting normal circulation and metabolic processes.
What should I expect after Gua Sha treatment?
Most people experience immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, and nausea. Gua Sha is valuable in the prevention and treatment of acute infectious illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many other acute or chronic disorders.
